TIL: Post-Jake Guniw Tools is largely plagiarized

Hey old school JRock kids, remember these guys? Guniw Tools were one of the more unique Japanese bands around during the late 90s boom of Japanese music. Because of the internet, a lot of these bands were getting exposure around the world, and teens such as myself were eating it up. Guniw Tools’ first few albums were during their trio-period, where guitarist Jake wrote a majority of the material. After Jake’s departure, Full (vocals) and Asaki (guitar, bass, programming) took over songwriting duties, and produced two of my all-time favorite albums- DAZZLE and Fickle Boon. DAZZLE was especially breathtaking at the time, as the styles on the album were all over the place, incorporating elements of shoegaze, industrial, pop, and trip-hop.

Today, all those feelings I have for those albums (in particular DAZZLE) have been shattered. A few years ago I discovered that the Looser Sugar, a song from Fickle Boon, was directly lifted from Yo La Tengo’s Sugarcube. I thought nothing of it, as it was common to find a few Japanese songs that were either direct “covers” or lifted riffs from Western music. What I didn’t realize was that 50% (that I know of at this point) of DAZZLE is blatantly plagiarized with no attribution in the liner notes to the original writers. I will first embed the Guniw Tools song, followed by the Western song it plagiarizes. This is a sad day for me, indeed.

So after a few years of having them online, it’s time for me to say goodbye to my first three albums and set of EPs. I’m glad they’ve been released and that others have had the opportunity to hear them. As of today, no justice, no peace, UMASA, Sonnenfinsternis, and Incentive are no longer available via Dystopiaq or Archive.org. Instead, selections from these releases are going to be remastered and re-released via this blog later in the year.

As for updates on Prospect St., things are going smoothly. Chase has mastered a few cuts so far, and they sound fantastic! The tracklist has changed around a bit, and I’ve removed and added here and there. It seems a release should be ready sometime in April or May. While you wait, here is a preview up the upcoming album with one of the first tracks mastered by Chase. Enjoy!
